Smores Trail Mix {After School Snack or Lunch Box Treat}

I was glancing through a after school snack cook book at the School Book Fair and came across this recipe for a S'mores Trail Mix. I thought to myself what a fun and easy  snack that the kids can make at home.  My kiddos love s'mores, but to be honest the only time we make them is when we go camping.

We don't go camping a awful lot. You see our camp outs usually consists of a camping in our back yard. But that's OK, my kids love back yard camp outs too. Besides that the only other time we have s'mores is in the winter when our fire place is in full swing.

This trail mix only requires a handful of ingredients which keeps it pretty low cost. You can use either teddy grahams or golden grahams cereal. I chose to use cereal instead of cookies. I chose to use cereal for cost purposes. A box of Golden Grahams Cereal was only $2.50 versus two boxes of Teddy Grahams prices at $2.68 each.

I wanted to keep this recipe as low cost as possible and I always have mini marshmallows and chocolate chips in the pantry. This trail mix is the perfect after school snack or lunch box treat. You can also add the trail mix to clear gift sacks and make treat bags for a school activity or party. What kid wouldn't love this.

The great thing about this recipe is the kids can make it all by themselves. Just toss all the ingredients in a large bowl and mix. Store in a airtight container and enjoy!!!!!!!!!! This little mix has the perfect combination of flavors.

Yum! Those mix of flavors would make great "smore rice crispy treats" too...

How can I stop the cereal from becoming soft and not crunchy?
I made this with teddy grahams for our camping trip this weekend and it was so yummy!

My only complaint (though not any fault of the author's) is that after the first day, the marshmallows get hard (like Lucky Charms). On the second day the cookies get soft. Still a great snack, but my recommendation for those bringing this camping is to bring the ingredients separately rather than prepare ahead of time at home.

I make this a lot, and the kids - and their friends - love it! Because it's so quick easy to make, I only make enough for one serving each time so it stays fresh and the marshmallows don't stick. One of my favorite stores - Cherry Republic (they sell everything 'cherry') sells this mix but also includes chocolate-covered cherries, which makes it extra yummy!

Love the polka dot theme and color! We were on the search for Smores twists on a classic recipe and came across your recipes post. Thanks for sharing this idea. I for one love when pantry items collide with an easy idea for the kids. I added this to our post today with your link and pinned it as well. :)
