When I hear Homemade Macaroni and Cheese I immediately think Comfort Food. It really is just the perfect cheesy casserole around. I usually don't make Macaroni and Cheese from scratch only because I have yet to find a so called Homemade Macaroni and Cheese recipe that I like.
Well.....that is until now! I tried this recipe on a whim and everyone loved it. this recipe is not low fat by any means, but like I always say if you're gonna make it good then you have to go big or go home.
I found this recipe in "The Deen Bros. Recipes from the Road" cookbook. Everyone knows I love their Mama so you gotta love those Deen boys as well. What I like most about this recipe is that it pretty much calls for ingredients that you have on hand.
This recipe was a snap to toss together and baked up really quick. The only thing negative thing I can say about this dish is that i should of made the full recipe. My family devoured the whole 8 x 8 in pan. I only made a half recipe, because I was unsure if they would like it or not. Boy was I wrong.!!!! Let's get started.
First cook the macaroni according to package directions for al dente pasta, then drain. Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease a 13 x 9 inch baking dish; set aside. Return macaroni to saucepan. While macaroni is hot, add the cheeses to the pan, Cheddar first then add the American cheese and lightly mix together.
Spread the macaroni mixture in the prepared baking dish.
in a separate bowl whisk together the milk, eggs, sour cream, and hot sauce if using
add the butter.
And pour the milk mixture over the macaroni. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown and bubbling.
This is how delicious the mac and cheese turned out. I cut the recipe below in half and made an 8 x 8 inch size pan. The recipe below is a full recipe for a 13 x 9 inch pan.

Cooks Note: American Cheese does not come shredded. I just stick a couple slices together and shred it myself. It can be a bit messy but worth it in the end. This recipe can easily be lightened up using whole grain pasta, low fat or fat free milk, sour cream and light cheese.

This is a great recipe. It's exactly how I make mine! Sometimes I will substitute white cheddar & white american for the yellow cheeses just for a different flavor.
Also, sometimes when I want to be real naughty I will put crumbled potato chips on top right before serving.
Thanks for posting this.
Donna you my girl if you love those Deen boys. Nice to look and can cook what a combination. Isnt that cookbook just the best.
Shawna give it a try. The old blue box is good and one of my faves. The homemade version is really good. I was surprised my family at all of it.
Thanks Teresa Mac & Cheese is so comfort food.
Question about this recipe - my oven is broken right now :( Parts are on backorder and it may be 2 more weeks. I have the stove top and slow cooker as cooking options. Do you think I could do this in the crock pot and what would you change if anything about ingredients and what about cook time / settings for the crock pot? Thanks for the help!
