Milky Way Cake {My Girl Paula Challenge}

This weeks My Girl Paula Challenge is to make Paula Milky Way Cake. Talk about rich this recipe uses three sticks of butter. If that isn't bad enough 6 - 8 milky way candy bars are added to the cake batter. .... Do I have your attention now?

This cake is definitely not diet friendly at all. I could only eat this cake every once in a great while any more than that and my back side would pay the price.  The candy bars are melted together with one stick of butter and then poured into the batter. Goodness I knew this cake was going to be a rich.

The frosting is also a boiled frosting consisting of evaporated milk, butter, marshmallow creme, sugar and chocolate chips. I was pressed for time and wanted to get this cake baked, so I didn't have time to prepare the cake as written (a three layer cake), so I made it into a bundt cake instead.

I think it turned out pretty good, I did have some batter left over, but no problem I added the remaining batter to mini bundt cake pans and made some baby cakes. The mini cakes will be perfect for the kids.

The only thing I disliked about this recipe was that it recommended dusting the pans with powdered sugar instead of flour or cocoa powder. The powdered sugar ended up burning a bit so I highly recommend dusting your cake pans with flour instead.  I have to admit this cake really did taste like a milky way candy bar.

Paula this cake is definitely dangerous what were you thinking girl?

With all the butter added, this reminded me of a pound cake.

All lined up and ready to eat!

Paula Deens Milky Way Cake

Ingredients:
8 - (1 3/4 ounce) Milky Way candy bars
1 1/2 - cups butter
2 - cups granulated sugar
4 - eggs, well beaten
2 1/2- cups all-purpose flour
1/4 - teaspoon baking soda
1 1/4 - cups buttermilk
1 - cup chopped pecans
1 - teaspoon vanilla extract

Frosting Recipe:
2 1/2 - cups granulated sugar
1 - cup evaporated milk
1 - cup marshmallow cream
1/2 - cup butter (1 - stick)
6 - ounces chocolate chips
1 - cup chopped pecans (Did not use)

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 325. Grease three 9-in. cake pans and dust them with confectioner's sugar. To make the cake, melt the Milky Way bars with 1 stick of butter. Remove from heat and let cool.

Cream the remaining 2 sticks of butter with the granulated sugar. Add the beaten eggs and the cooled chocolate mixture.

Sift the flour and the baking soda together. Alternately add the flour and buttermilk to the batter, blending well. Add the nuts and vanilla.

Divide the batter among the prepared pans and bake for 30-40 minute or until the cake is firm to the touch. Cool for 5 minutes, remove from the pans and place on cooling racks.

While the cake cools prepare the icing. Combine the sugar and milk in a heavy saucepan. Cook to the soft-ball stage (234 degrees on a candy thermometer).

Remove the pan from the heat and add the marshmallow cream, butter and chocolate chips, stirring until melted. Add the pecans.

When the cake has cooled completely, frost each layer, sides and top of the Milky Way Cake.

Cooks Notes: I used a bundt pan and mini bundts instead of 3 round pans. I also cut the frosting recipe in half, but it was still plenty to glaze the entire cake plus the minis. This frosting sets up very quickly. Also if using a bundt pan do not dust the pans with powdered sugar, because it will burn, I recommend using flour. .

Oh yes! I am so glad someone did this recipe. I had itended to, had all the ingredients, just never got around to it. It looks fantastic! And I love your idea for using the mini bundts - I may have to try that one, too!

Hey Michelle, I am the dessert person on get togethers, so i brought this cake yesterday. Its always great to share then my family and me doesn't have to eat the entire thing. I am trying real hard to do at least 2 challenges a month. I seem to hit the desserts.

I really wanted to make this but after a 11 lb weight loss, I didn't. I always seem to be the dessert person too. I would've made this for last Thursday's dinner at parents, but it was only 3 of us and I didn't want the leftovers! It looks so delicious. I will definitely make one day!

A version of this recipe has been in my family for so long that it calls for 5 cent Milky Ways. We always bake in a bundt pan, never use frosting. This cake is best after a day or two. All the gooey stuff gathers at the bottom.

I love how pretty your bundt cake turned out, especially with the chocolate chips! I didn't want to put nuts in my cake either. I think I'll put some candy bar sprinkles on top of my cupcakes. I had to halve my recipe because I ran out of sugar (of all things to run out of.....) This is one fattening cake : )

Your cake looks so good I would like to lick the screen! The boubon chicken I had was at golden corral too. It was so good. My recipe didn't taste anything like it though, but it was good :) I need to try to find a copy cat recipe.

I haven't had time to make this yet, I may do it for some company this weekend. I love your idea of using a bundt pan and skipping all the time-consuming layers. And your little minis are gorgeous!

Love love love this!!!
Here is a tip on dusting the pans..if you are making a "dark" cake, dust the pans with cocoa powder instead of flour!

Yeah I knew to use cocoa powder with a chocolate or dark cake. But this cake is a bit light so I used flour on the mini's. I dont know why they recommened powdered sugar it was awful. Sugar burns. leslie it is a rich and awfully dangerous cake. With tht in mind make it.

Made this cake last night. It smells and looks great. I haven't tried it yet. Made it for Labor Day Weekend festivities.I didn't use as much frosting as you did, just a personal preference. But you were right. I could have frosted everything in my house with just half of that frosting recipe. Can't wait to eat it. Oh!!My husband ate the batter (cleaned the bowl with a spoon) and gave it a thumbs up!

Don't you love bundt pans? For whatever reason, they seem to make baking so much simpler.
These all look awesome, but I'm really smitten with those minis. Great job!

Could I use an equal ammount of the milky way bites could be substituted for the milky way bars or would it make it too chocolatey?

I would like to make some mini cakes, and put them in a "Christmas Basket", and give them as gifts to my family, and friends.

@Anonymous no surprise on not leaving a comment with your name. Most folks who post rude comments usually post anonymously. I think it was a well written post for someone with Dyslexia and no I am not illiterate. Maybe you can think before you comment because there are real people behind these blogs and computers. Just a thought and have a wonderful day.
