Strawberry Delight Dessert

This simple strawberry dessert starts with a buttery pecan-shortbread crust, topped with a cream cheese - dream whip filling and finished off with strawberry pie filling.
Good Morning Everyone and Happy Monday!!! I hope everyone had a wonderful Mothers Day. We had a nice relaxing day and a great meal. We grilled out and I made a wonderful dessert, Strawberry Delight. This is one of my favorite desserts and perfect for summer.

I had added a teaser photo yesterday on face book and I promised that I would post the recipe today. If you love strawberries then this is the perfect dessert for you. This dessert is so pretty and would make the perfect addition for any summer get together, barbecue or church potluck.

This recipe starts with a buttery pecan shortbread cookie crust that is baked and then topped with a creamy filling made with cream cheese and dream whip. Top with Strawberry pie filling and your done. This dish looks like you spent tons of time on it but really it takes no time to throw together.

You will need 2 cans of strawberry pie filling, but since it was so pricey at $3 a can. I used just one. I think I will try my hand at homemade strawberry pie filling next time to keep the cost at a minimum.

I was thinking that you could experiment and try other pie fillings such as blueberry or cherry. But by far Strawberry is my all time favorite. I also wanted to show you what I got for mothers day and then onto the recipe.

We spent the day just piddling around and went for a nice drive. My son made me a mothers day card and some coupons at school. He did such a awesome job. My Mackenzie wrote a story for me.

She typed it up on the computer, printed it and added her picture. She did this all by herself and it was such a nice surprise. She told me mommy your a good cooker and I love you. It was so sweet I had to take a picture to share with everyone.

I also got a bouquet of flowers, some very needed cooking utensils and a set of Paula Deen knives that I have had my eye on. I loved all of my gifts, but the homemade gifts from the kids are my favorite ones. They spent so much time making them and those are the best gifts. I love being a mom!!! OK as promised finally onto the recipe.

These are the ingredients you will need: All purpose flour, powdered sugar, real butter, cream cheese, dream whip (add milk & vanilla extract to make the dream whip), pecans and strawberry pie filling.
Start by preheating the oven to 350 degree. Prepare crust by adding the butter and flour to a mixing bowl and blend using a large fork or pasty blender. Add chopped pecans and mix. Press mixture into the bottom of a 9 x 13 inch pan.

Bake at 350 degrees for 18-20 minutes or until light golden brown. When done remove from oven and let cool.

While the crust is cooling prepare the filling. Prepare dream whip according to package directions (adding milk & vanilla extract per package directions), whip until soft peaks form then set aside.

Mix the cream cheese and powdered sugar together using a electric mixer. Add prepared dream whip to cream cheese mixtures. When the crust is completely cooled add the cream cheese filling on top of the crust

and spread evenly. Top with strawberry pie filling

As you can see I stretched one can of pie filling. Chill for at least 4 - 6 hours. .

I piped some whipping cream on top and added a fresh strawberry. After it chills dig in!!!!!!!!!!!! The buttery shortbread crust is soooo crispy and good. I just know you're going to love it!!!

This sounds great. If I was to make the Homemade Strawberry Pie Filling Recipe and use it for the Strawberry Delight, would I make one batch or two? I see the recipe calls for 2 cans of store bought.
Thank you!

We make something very similar to this at our house. We also love making it with cherry pie filling, and my most favorite--fresh peaches!!

Tina,

This looks so yummy! I have loads of strawberries to get through and this could definitely help with doing just that.

Hi Couponer, I think one batch should be fine of the homemade pie filling. If you dont want to go all homemade another option is to use fresh sliced strawberries and buy the strawberry glaze that you find in the produce section of the grocery store. They come in containers or a clear bag.

Can I substitute regular whipped cream for the Dream Whip? I live out of the US and we don't have Dream Whip here. Thank you for sharing the recipe. It sure looks yummy!

This sounds great and can't wait to try. Today here in Indiana it is cloudy, windy and very cool sooo I am making your wonderful pumpkin crunch as I have made several times in the fall. Just feeling a little "fallish today" I have 4 boys and they love pumpkin. Thanks!
Oh my goodness, this looks delicious! Perfect for summer or anytime...thanks for another good one!

That looks completely delicious! Have you ever used cherry or peach pie filling to make it? The strawberry sounds really good though.

Mmmm! This looks awesome! I have a question about the recipe, though. It calls for 1 1/4 cup butter (1 stick plus 4 Tbs), but 1 stick butter is only 1/2 cup, isn't it? So should it be 2 sticks plus 4 Tbs, or 3/4 cup?

Thank you Laura!!!! My bad oh goodness I hope no one made the recipe yet. Thank you so much for catching that you are correct. I fixed the printable version as well. I was thinking in my brain 1 stick plus a 1/2 a stick of butter and ended up typing 1 1/2 cups. All fixed now.

Tannis I did some research and there isnt a substitute for dream whip. I am thinking cool whip would come close. I did not measure the dream whip after preparing it. But from memory it looked like about 2 cups prepared. hopefully this helps some.
This looks delicious, the combination of the nuts with of course all the other goodies - mmm! Thanks for the post :)

Look so yummy, can't wait to try. So glad to find another recipe that uses Dream Whip... my husband's uncle loves "Watergate Cake" and I always by a boxd only use 2 packets, so now I can make this at the same time. Thanks for YET another GREAT recipe.

Thanks for letting my know about the Dream Whip. I just may have to bookmark this for one day when we're back in the states (maybe this summer). We don't have Cool Whip here either but if I get brave enough maybe I'll try regular whipped cream. Not exactly sure what Dream Whip is so I'm not sure if it would work.

I told my husband that you commented on your facebook page and he asked how do I know you. I explained that I was looking for a recipe and found your blog and showed it to him. Big mistake. Now he wants me to make the German Chocolate Cheesecake and the Peanut Butter Cupcakes. Strawberry Cake is what I'm making now as we speak. Love your site. Thanks.

Oh,No! I didn't read the correction...I only used 1 stick plus 4 table spoons of butter!? It's cooling now...Hope it still comes out ok!
Making this right now! And I did use the recommended amount of butter but I'm sure it will be just as tasty!

You added the right amount of butter. It's 3/4 cup real butter, softened (1 stick + 4 tablespoons. The original recipe was corrected awhile back.

Oh my word...this is sooo yummy! I made this for mother's day and brought it over to my mother in laws. Everyone LOVED it! Even his grandma (who's an incredible cook) couldn't stop saying enough good things about it especially the crust! The crust is so easy, yet tastes amazing! I love all your recipes! Whenever I'm in the mood to make something new, I always go to your website! My hubby thanks you too! : )

Where does the vanilla go?
Tina Butler said…
I added a note regarding the vanilla extract. It is part of the dream whip ingredients and noted to follow the packet directions.

This recipe looks great and I will definitely try it this summer. I'm looking for one that is similar but it also uses small pretzels in it. It's salty and sweet. Have you ever seen one like that?

Do you know what the equivalent amount of sugar-free jello would be????

Hey Tina, tried this last night and we loved it! We used Christy Jordan's cookie crumb pie crust with this, you crush up about 40 vanilla wafers, add 3 Tab. sugar and stir in 6 Tab. margarine. Pat into a pie plate. No need bake. It went well with this strawberry delight. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. My family also enjoys your cheese enchiladas. It's one of my husbands favorites! Thank you again!

Your homemade strawberry glaze recipe is the best. I use it in all recipes that call for the store bought glaze. It tastes great and without all the preservatives.
Tina Butler said…
I agree the homemade is wonderful and so easy.

I really like to use Strawberry Kiwi geletin - it makes it really good!

I think I'll try this for 4th of July. Your Homemade Strawberry Pie filling recipe is similar to mine but I like to use Wild Strawberry flavor gelatin. It gives an extra zing!
maryann said…
I make something similar using ladyfingers that are store bought and use them for the bottom layer.
I then make the cream cheese layer like you do and the top layer I use strawberry jello and add strawberries to it that are either frozen or fresh and then put it in the frig.

Where is your Pin It button? This is very similar to my aunt's recipe that the family loves so much, but she uses frozen sweetened strawberries.

The pin it button it located at the end of my post.

I just love this recipe! I've been making it for years with a can of cooked crushed pineapple as the topping. Love the fact that you add pecans to the crust! YUM!!!

I just fixed the recipe so thank you for pointing that out. Also the amount of strawberries for the homemade pie filling was incorrect as well. All is well again.

Does anyone know, can you leave the nuts out of the crust and maybe increase the other crust ingredients a bit? I have family allergic to nuts.

That looks so yummy! I can't wait to try and make it!

Also, where did you get the cute flour and confectioner's sugar jars? Or if it's just labels you put on regular jars, where did you get the labels? So cute! Thanks!

How long does the homemade strawberry topping last? Can I make it ahead
and refridgerate it for the following week?
Anonymous said…
I may have read the recipe wrong but how did the cool whip get incorporated into the filling??
Tina Butler said…
1 - envelope dream whip, prepared according to package directions or
1 - 8 oz container cool whip
Anonymous said…
Can this be made ahead and stored in freezer until needed?
Anonymous said…
When do you add the container of cool whip? Or is it just the dream whip ?
Tina Butler said…
Recipe states to use dream whip or cool whip (whipped topping). Dream whip can be hard to find sometimes.
