Cinnamon Applesauce Christmas Ornaments

Easy Cinnamon Scented - Applesauce Ornaments are a must make this holiday season. They're perfect for hanging throughout the house, on the tree, to make garland or used as scented bowl fillers.
It has been quite some time since we did a craft post on Mommy's Kitchen! Several years ago, I made some Cinnamon Christmas Ornaments, but we only have a few left. Old fashioned cinnamon ornaments are my absolute favorite and a fun activity for the kids. My daughter asked me what the ornaments were made of and I told her cinnamon and applesauce, she couldn't believe it.

I told the kids since we only have  couple left how about making a batch together?  The kids loved mixing up the cinnamon scented dough and cutting out all the festive shapes. My son said the dough smelled so good that you could almost eat it. I had to explain to him that these were not edible ornaments, but craft ornaments for our Christmas tree.

When the ornaments are dry, you can leave them plain or get creative and decorate the with puppy paint and glitter. I like to keep them plain the old fashioned way.  These cute little ornaments also make wonderful garland and beautiful bowl fillers along with some fresh dried orange slices and cinnamon sticks.

Another festive, old fashioned idea is to run raffia through one of the ornaments and tie it onto Christmas gifts for a homemade touch.

These cinnamon ornaments make beautiful teacher, co worker or gifts for a friend. Just place a variety of ornament shapes in a pretty box for a nice homemade gift. I don't know about you but homemade presents are my favorite gifts to receive. Cinnamon ornaments are my favorite way to celebrate and old fashioned Christmas and they are simple to make.

Here are some picture of my kiddos making the Christmas ornaments. They had so much fun.

Mr. handsome giving me a pose.

Don't forget to add the holes while the dough is still wetA straw works great for this. Lay ornaments on foil-covered pan and place in the oven on 170 degrees for about 2 hours, remove from oven and let dry for 24-48 hours.

Add some holiday ribbon or jute twin to hang your cinnamon ornaments on the Christmas tree. Your house will smell so good while the ornaments are baking.

This was originally posted in 2010 - updated in 2023 with new photos. It's so fun to look back at how small my kiddos were. Time is a thief and I miss my babies being young. Now I have grandbabies, so I need to keep the tradition going. 💗

I am going to make these with my son. We did an all edible tree this year. I know not to eat these. I love this craft, great work, I can just imagine how good they smell.

We used to make these when I was a kid -- nearly 30 years later, we still have ornaments in our Christmas boxes that have a faint smell to them! Love these. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

I was searching for this recipe...Going to do this with my Grandkids this weekend...Thanks...Blessings!
The weekend of Thanksgiving I made Gingerbread cookies with my grandkids. Not for eating. I made 'em a little thicker than usual and decorated them so they'd make sturdy Christmas tree ornaments. On the back hot glue an ornament hook and tie a red satin bow to the top.

I think I made a memory with my grandkids. *smile*

Thank you so much for posting your recipe for those adorable ornaments. My daughter made them years ago when she was in preschool (she's getting ready to graduate from college) and all of the ornaments she made are now gone. How fun would it be to relive those memories and make some new ornaments to add to our tree this year. I know she's all grown up now ... but it never hurts to travel back in time, if only for a bit.

I just found your blog from a search for these applesauce and cinnamon ornaments. I made these quite a few years ago and wanted to try it again this year with a twist. I am going to attempt to do a faux "gingerbread" house. I remember when I made this recipe it smelled so good. My husband came home, grabbed a "gingerbread" man and took a bit before I could say anything! Boy did he get a surprise. I subscribed to your blog. The red and white polka dots grabbed me right away. I am nuts about them and have them all over my kitchen! Although I am very busy I am trying to cook more and have been searching f or new recipes to try. I will feel right at home here. :)

Hi Tina, I was wondering why you use glue in the recipe.
Thanks!
Sue

The glue helps to make the dough firm.
