Terra Cotta Tiered Herb Garden (Container Gardening)

The weather in North Texas has been absolutely beautiful the last couple months. All these spring like temps have really made me anxious to get started on a few gardening and outdoor projects. 

One project I want to tackle this year is planting an outdoor herb garden. Nothing too fancy, just something small, so I have fresh herbs on hand for cooking. I love using fresh herbs, but they can be pretty pricey in the grocery store, so the best solution is just growing your own. 

Last month we planted our vegetable garden and it's pretty full, so I don't want to overcrowd, it by by adding any additional herb plants. After looking at quite a few options I settled on creating a Terra Cotta Tiered Herb Garden.  

A couple years back, I made a tiered flower planter and I got so many compliments on it. A friend shared a video with me for a tiered herb planter and I couldn't believe I didn't think of it myself. It was exactly like my tiered flower planter, but using fresh herbs instead. 

I love container gardening, because it can spruce up just about any outdoor area and they're also the perfect solution for small spaces. When Walmart asked me to create a home or outdoor project I knew exactly what I wanted to make.   

I headed to my local Walmart to gather all my supplies and I was super excited that I was able to get everything I needed all in one place.  No running around to multiple stores, so you gotta love that. For my outdoor herb planter I spent a total of $29.73.  I did go over budget just a tad, but not by much and it turned out beautiful!!! If you would like to make your own Tiered Herb Garden Planter, stop by your local Walmart and pick up all the needed supplies.

Supplies needed to make your own Tiered Herb Garden: 

• 3 - Terra Cotta clay pots in three different sizes  (10 inch, 8 inch and 6 inch) $9.39
• 1 - Terra Cotta saucer for largest pot $2.38
• 1 - small bag potting soil  (I had a package so that was free)
• 2 - cans exterior spray paint (2 colors) $4.64 for both 
• 1 - medium size empty can and 1 small plastic container (free)
• 1 - package adhesive letter stickers $2.68
• 3 - varieties of fresh herbs (I used basil, cilantro and parsley) $3.58 each  

If you have trouble finding fresh herbs in the outdoor department, stop by the produce section, because Walmart also sells organic fresh herb plants for $2.98 each. 

To start spray paint each Terra Cotta pot in the color of your choice (including saucer). Let dry completely, and stick the letters on each pot for the matching herbs. 

Spray paint over the pot and letters with a different color, let dry and peel off the letters.  If you want you can also spray on a clear matte enamel spray to seal the paint (let dry completely before filling pots). 

Place the largest pot on the saucer. Invert the larger can (coffee can) inside the large pot. 

Add soil up to the top of the inserted can. 

Then place the medium planter pot on top of the can.  Fill with some more soil to secure the medium pot in place. Place which ever herb you would like to go inside the large planter pot.

Repeat the steps for the medium and small planter pots.  

Terra Cotta Tiered Herb Garden

Plastic drop cloth or newspapers

3 - different size Terra Cotta Clay Pots in 3 sizes (I used 10 in, 8 in and 6 in)

1 - Terra Cotta Clay saucer for largest planter

2 - cans spray paint  (I used flat white and Colonial Red)
1 - package medium size adhesive letters stickers

1 - empty can and 1 plastic container (small enough to fit inside the large and med pot. (I used a small coffee can and plastic container)

3 - different fresh herb varieties

Spread out drop cloth or newspaper in a area with no wind. 

Spray paint each Terra Cotta pot in the color of your choice (including saucer). Let dry completely, and stick on the letters on each pot for matching herb. 

Spray paint over the pot and letters with a different color, let dry and peel off the letters. 

Place the largest pot on the saucer. Invert the larger can (coffee can) inside the large pot. Add soil up to the top of the inserted can. Then place the medium planter pot on top of the can.

Fill with some more soil to secure the medium pot in place. Place which ever herb you would like to go inside the large planter pot.

Repeat the steps for the medium and small planter pots.

Place your new tiered herb planter in a sunny place and enjoy. I placed mine on our back deck. I ♥  my new herb garden planter.
