Cowboy Hot Dogs & CMT Summer of Music

Grilled hot dogs topped with honey barbecue baked beans, caramelized onions, crumbled bacon, and cheddar - jack cheese.
Grilled or baked hot dogs are delicious, especially at a barbecue or camp out. Let's face it plain old ketchup, mustard and relish can be a bit boring, so in our house we love our hot dogs served with various toppings. A few of our favorites are Texas Style Chili Dogs, Coney Dogs, New York Dogs and Chicago Dogs.

My preferred method for cooking hot dogs is definitely grilled or on a stick and cooked over an open campfire. Yum there's just something about a a perfectly roasted hot dog between a lightly toasted bun. Well, recently I teamed up with Bar-S to share a recipe in celebration of the CMT Summer of Music Sweepstakes.

When I was deciding on a recipe to share "cowboys" came to mind, so today I'm sharing my recipe for Cowboy Hot Dogs using Bar-S Premium Beef Franks. My version of a cowboy dog is a grilled hot in between a lightly toasted bun and topped with barbecue baked beans, caramelized onions, crumbled bacon and cheddar-jack cheese. It doesn't get much better than that folks.

These delicious Cowboy Hot Dogs are simple to make and start with caramelized onions. The onions can take a bit of time to make, but are totally worth the wait. To make the onions, in a large skillet over medium heat, saute the sliced onions in olive oil and 2 tablespoons butter.

Let the onions caramelize for about 20 minutes then set the onions aside.

Yum ......... I could just eat these onions right out of the pan.

In a separate large skillet, cook the bacon until crispy, drain the bacon grease. Remove some of the crumbled bacon to use as a topping.

Add the baked beans, honey and barbecue sauce to the remaining bacon and mix until combined. Simmer over medium heat until the beans are cooked through.

Using an outdoor grill or grill pan, grill the hot dogs on all sides until heated through and the hot dogs have visible grill marks.

Lightly butter the hot dog buns and toast on the grill pan. Watch carefully so they don't burn.

Assemble the hot dogs by adding one cooked hot dog to a bun, then adding the baked beans, then caramelized onions, additional bacon and shredded cheese. Serve while still hot.

I have heard of cowboy hot dogs, but I have never tried them. Seeing as how I like loaded hot dogs, I think that I would definitely like this. We will have to give it a try at our next Backyard Barbecue.

Well that sounds like a fun sweepstakes! I don't enter enough of them but always think to myself how it's always worth a shot. Those hot dogs absolutely look delicious!

These remind me a lot of a local food truck that sells gyros and hot dogs starting around 9pm. Even though we don't bar hop late into the evening, sometimes we'll head downtown specifically in search of a hot dog. They're truly the best and worth the splurge. The sweepstakes looks great .. summer concerts are the best! x

That is quite the gourmet hot dog! I am kind of boring with my hot dog toppings (ketchup and mustard), but my husband loves to load his up. He'd really like this recipe! I do agree with you, grilled is definitely the best!

The hot dogs look awesome. I would never have thought to use baked beans in a hot dog. I am really curious about the taste of these dogs. And of course anything gets better with bacon.
