2019 Backyard Summer Garden

Here's a peek at what we are growing in our summer garden this year. In our large raised be we planted the following:

  • Straight Neck Yellow Squash
  • Zucchini Squash
  • Cantaloupe
  • Pole Green Beans
  • Jalapeno Peppers
  • Pepperoncinis
  • Bell Peppers
  • Corn
  • Tomatoes
  • Purple Hull Peas

We have 3 smaller raised beds. In the first bed we planted yellow onions. They are already falling over so it won't be long until they are ready to harvest.

Update: We harvested a pretty good amount on the onions. Some bigger than others, but they tasted really good.

We had some additional tomato plants in our second smaller bed. We use the Ruth Stout method for adding straw in our raised beds. It really helps to keep all the moisture in, weeds out and it all breaks down in the soil which helps the beds for next years crops.

We planted red potatoes in our last smaller bed and they really well.

Look at all those red potatoes!

We planted white and Kenebec potatoes at the start of the season which had since been harvest before taking the initial garden picture. Kenebec potatoes grow really well for us.

Our pole beans did pretty well, but I do prefer the bush variety better. For some reason they just produce more for us versus pole beans. The picking season is shorter, but we always plant a second crop of bush beans since the growing season in Texas is longer.

This was our first harvest! Not bad at all and a couple zucchini.

Cantaloupe always does well for us. It always amazes me how they stay on them stem so well without falling off.

I think we grew 7 this year and they were we sweet and perfect in color.

Yellow squash always produces well for us. Zucchini on the other hand is hit or miss and I have no idea why.

I always plant Boston Picklers to make pickles and they produce like crazy. This photo is just two days of picking. A few are larger and too big for pickling, but they were perfect for salads.

We had lots of beautiful peppers by the end of summer.

And tons of jalapenos perfect for pickling, jalapeno jelly or cowboy candy

This was our first year growing Pepperoncinis and boy did they produce. We had peppers coming out of our ears. They grew way more than we expected.

We also planted a small herb garden. We planted Dill, Chives, Pineapple Sage, Basil and Rosemary.

Our pear tree was filled with fruit, so we harvested a pretty good amount.

I love when we get pears because I can make my favorite pear preserves
