Poor Man's Steak is common in Amish communities. It's an old-fashioned recipe that uses ground beef in place of a more expensive cut of meat. Ground beef is mixed with cracker crumbs, milk, chopped onions, seasonings, cut into squares, grilled and then covered in a creamy mushroom gravy before being baked in the oven. Poor Man's Steak is is the perfect comfort food.
Poor Man's Steak might sound like a boring hamburger recipe, but I assure you it is quite delicious.
Perfectly seasoned and grilled hamburger steaks, smothered in a cream gravy and served over fluffy mashed potatoes or noodles. Pair with a crisp salad and a vegetable and you have a delicious hearty meal. I hope you'll give this recipe a try.
After combing the hamburger, cracker crumb mixture and seasoning together, press the meat mixture into a 13x9 inch baking dish and refrigerate overnight.
Remove from the refrigerator and cut the meat into serving size pieces and grill slightly.
You don't want them fully cooked just with some grill markings on each side. Add the hamburger steaks back to the baking pan and set aside. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix the mushroom gravy ingredients together and whisk until blended. Pour the mixture over the steaks and bake at 350 uncovered for 45 minutes - 1 hour, depending on your oven.
Serve with gravy over mashed potatoes or noodles.

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1/2 - cup unsalted saltines or Ritz crackers, crushed (I place mine in a ziplock bag and crush using a rolling pin).
- 1/2 - cup milk
- 1/4 - cup chopped onion
- 1 - teaspoon Cavenders Greek seasoning
- 1/4 - teaspoon paprika
- salt & pepper, to taste
Creamy Mushroom Gravy
- 2 - cans Cream of Mushroom soup
- 1 1/4 - Cups Milk
- 1 - tablespoon Worchestershire Sauce
- 3/4 - teaspoon Cavenders Greek seasoning
- salt & pepper to taste
- 1 - tablespoon fresh parsley or 1 teaspoon dried parsley
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix the cracker crumbs and milk together; set aside
- In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, chopped onion, seasonings, salt and pepper.
- Add the milk and cracker mixture and mix to combine (I use my hands). Don't over mix the ground beef mixture.
- Press the meat mixture into a 13 x 9 inch baking pan and refrigerate overnight.
- Cut the meat into serving size pieces and grill slightly. You don't want them fully cooked just with some grill markings.
- Add the hamburger steaks back to the baking pan and set aside;
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- In a medium bowl, mix the mushroom gravy ingredients together using a wire whisk until blended. Pour the mixture over the steaks.
- Bake uncovered for 45 minutes - 1 hour (depending on your oven).
- Serve with gravy over mashed potatoes.

We love it too! I like how the hamburger steaks are grilled first and then baked. The meat is so much more flavorful.
