Soft, fluffy breadsticks, brushed with garlic, butter and sprinkled with shredded cheese. Make these homemade breadsticks to pair with your favorite pasta meal or soup.
Happy Friday everyone! Do you have a go-to recipe that you make over and over? Well, these homemade breadsticks are my new go-to recipe to pair with just about any of our favorite pasta meals, soup or salad. Soft, fluffy breadsticks, brushed with garlic, butter and sprinkled with shredded cheese. The best part about this recipe is you can make these breadsticks ahead of time and freeze them for later.
I normally make one big batch, use some for dinner and freeze the remainder for future meals. I love having homemade breadsticks on hand without all the prep time. These breadsticks also re-heat easily. Just wrap them up in some aluminum foil and pop them in the oven at 275 F for 15-20 minutes or until heated through.
This breadstick recipe can also be used as pizza crust. One recipe will make two medium size pizza crusts. Just prepare, pre-bake the crust, add the toppings and put the pizza under the oven broiler to melt the toppings, but watch closely. I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as my family does.
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE BREADSTICKS
In a stand mixer add warm water, yeast, brown sugar (or honey) and salt. Let sit until foamy (about 3-5 minutes). Add the flour one cup at a time until the dough is smooth (adding more flour if needed). This dough is stickier than regular bread dough.
Knead the dough on low for about 5 minutes or until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
the dough will be soft and elastic.
Place the dough into a greased bowl covered with plastic wrap (sprayed with non stick spray) or cover with a lid.
Let dough rise until double in size (about 30 minutes).
On greased parchment paper on a large baking sheet press the dough flat into an even rectangle.
Cut into bread stick about 1 inch wide using a pizza cutter.
Let the cut breadsticks sit for about 10 minutes before baking. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
I like to brush a light coat of butter on top before baking and then more after baking.
Bake for 15 - 20 minutes until the tops are lightly golden brown.
Remove from oven and brush with melted butter and sprinkle with garlic powder and shredded cheese (optional).
Cool and enjoy!
Place the remainder of the breadsticks in a freezer bag and freeze until ready to use. To warm up the breadsticks, place the on a sheet of aluminum foil and fold into a pouch. Bake on 350 degrees until hot.
