How to make Herb Bombs (Using Fresh Herbs)

Herb bombs are an easy way to preserve an abundance of fresh herbs. These flavor bombs are perfect for soups, stews, sauces, sautéing and more!
As summer starts to finally wind down, are you still overloaded with fresh herbs? After all the drying and preserving that I did all summer, I still have plenty of fresh herbs growing in my backyard garden. Now the question comes of what to do with all those precious herbs. I hate to waste anything, so to get the most out of all my fresh herbs, I like to make herb bombs for cooking.

What are herb bombs? Herb bombs are frozen cubes of fresh herbs and oil that can be used in many ways. Herb bombs are simple to make and can be stored in the freezer for up to 6 months. You can thaw them to use in dressings, or add them to a hot pan in place of oil to season sauces, soups, stews, or for  sautéing or roasting vegetables. The best part is, you can customize the herb bombs by using a variety of different herbs.

This is my small herb garden. It's small but mighty and I still have plenty to use.

I also have plenty of basil to preserve before fall. Even though it's November and it's officially fall, I live in Texas so that really means nothing when it comes to seasons. If you still have fresh herbs hanging around give these herb bombs a try, I promise you will love having them on hand.

HOW TO MAKE HERB FLAVORED BOMBS:

  • 🌿 Fresh Herbs: Choose whatever herbs that you have on hand. A few of my favorites are basil, oregano, thyme, lemon thyme rosemary, and parsley.
  • 🌿 Favorite Herb Combinations:
    parsley, rosemary and garlic
    oregano, basil and garlic
    basil and garlic
thyme and parsley (with or without garlic)
  • 🥗 Olive Oil or Broth: use your favorite olive oil or olive oil blend. You can also use beef or chicken broth to make herb bombs for soup and stew.
  • 🧄Minced Garlic: fresh minced garlic or jarred minced garlic.
  • 🍴 Sharp Knife & Cutting Board: to cut and chop the herbs.
  • 🧊 Ice Cube Tray, small silicone molds or plastic egg holder: to freeze the herbs and oil and to shape them into bombs
  • 💙 Ziploc Freezer Bags: so you can store the herbs in the freezer.

To start cut the herbs off the plant and separate them. I have an apple mint plant and I love to chop and freeze the mint to make apple mint ice cubes to use in drinks. Apple mint is has a fruiter scent and a more subtle minty flavor  than regular fresh mint.

Wash the herbs under cold running water to remove any bugs, dirt or debris. I use my salad spinner to dry my herbs after I rinse them.

Chop the herbs by hand or use a small chopper. This little manual hand pull chopper works great.

add the chopped herbs into the molds and cover 2/3 full with olive oil or broth.

Place in the freezer and freeze until solid. This can take a couple days, but they will freeze.

Remove from freezer and pop the herb bombs out of the molds and store in freezer bags. Make sure to label and date the bags. Use 1-2 herb bombs in your favorite dishes.

HOW TO USE HERB FLAVORED BOMBS:

  • Toss the cubes into a hot pan for sautéing vegetables and pasta.
  • Quickly make up a salad dressing by thawing out a couple of herb bombs and whisking with lemon juice, salt, pepper, addition oil, vinegar or balsamic vinegar.
  • Add them to a large baking pan when roasting vegetable (broccoli, asparagus, etc.) in the oven.
  • My favorite way to use herb bombs is adding them to my homemade marinara sauce.
  • Add herb bombs to stir fry dishes.

  • A variety of herb bombs also delicious used in a marinade for meats.
